Empowering Generations Through Education
Welcome to the Penn Wynn Foundation
Penn Wynn – inspiring young people for over 350 years
The Penn Wynn Foundation exists to continue the legacy of Reverend Charles Winn, the beloved vicar of St Bartholomew’s Church in Penn from 1646 to 1669. He passionately believed in nurturing the minds and hearts of young people, equipping them not just academically but spiritually – with the word of God. Today, the Foundation continues this mission, empowering young people across the Ancient Parish of Penn through Christian education, safe community spaces, and youth-led initiatives.
From Bible presentations and faith-based residentials to leadership roles in worship, the Foundation is here to ensure no child walks alone in their faith journey. Join us in carrying forward this vibrant mission in today’s world.

Our Rich History
The Legacy of Reverend Charles Winn
In 1646, Reverend Charles Winn arrived as the vicar of St Bartholomew’s Church, Penn. He ministered during turbulent times – through the English Civil War, the Commonwealth under Cromwell, and the Restoration of the Monarchy. Despite these challenges, his heart remained steadfast in serving children. At a time when Penn had no school, he taught young people to read, write, and count – and most importantly, to grow in their Christian faith.
In his will, Rev Winn left money and farmland to fund the building of a school, pay a teacher, and ensure each child received a Bible upon leaving. This act of visionary generosity laid the foundation for what became the Penn Wynn Foundation. The original school was built in 1714 and rebuilt in 1871. The tradition of giving Bibles continues to this day.
